Why Carlsbad Caverns

Carlsbad Caverns National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in New Mexico's Guadalupe Mountains. There are 119 caves in this park. The Big Room — the main chamber most visitors walk through — is nearly 4,000 feet long, 625 feet wide, and 255 feet tall at its highest point. One of the largest cave chambers in North America.

Every night from late May through October, 400,000 Mexican free-tailed bats exit the natural cave entrance in a spiraling column that lasts 20 to 40 minutes. Watching it costs absolutely nothing. That's where every budget tier starts.

🏔️ America the Beautiful Annual Pass — $80/Year

The $15 park entrance fee is waived with the America the Beautiful Annual Pass. It covers all 400+ federal recreation sites — including White Sands National Park just 150 miles away. Two New Mexico parks alone cover half the pass cost. Get it before you go.

Pro Tips
Book Before You Leave Home

Timed entry reservations at recreation.gov sell out on summer weekends. Book cave entry and King's Palace at the same time.

Best Time in the Cave

Natural Entrance opens at 8:30 AM. The first hour is the least crowded time in the Big Room — go early.

Bring Layers

The cave is 56°F year-round. Dress in layers — you'll sweat in the desert above and freeze below.

Add Guadalupe Mountains

Just 1 hour 15 minutes southwest into Texas — three peaks over 8,000 ft, almost no crowds, America the Beautiful Pass covers it.
