Desert & Night Sky

Carlsbad is famous for what's underground, but the surface is a wonder too — a vast Chihuahuan Desert of canyons and cactus by day, and one of the darkest, most star-filled skies in America by night.

The Walnut Canyon Desert Drive

The Walnut Canyon Desert Drive is a roughly 9.5-mile, one-way gravel loop off the entrance road that winds through the backcountry Chihuahuan Desert — big views into the canyons, quiet pull-offs, and desert wildlife, especially in the golden hours. Any car can manage it in dry conditions; go slow and bring water.

Chihuahuan Desert Hiking

Above the cave stretches real desert wilderness. Trails like Rattlesnake Canyon, the Old Guano Road, and Juniper Ridge lead into rugged, lonely country — hot, exposed, and gorgeous. Carry far more water than you think you need, start early, and check in about backcountry permits for longer routes.

An International Dark Sky Park

Carlsbad Caverns is a certified International Dark Sky Park, and the show after dark rivals the one below ground. Far from any city glow, the Milky Way arches over the desert in astonishing detail. Seasonal night-sky programs and star parties make the most of it — or just look up from the lot after the bats.

Desert & Bats Together

The desert and the sky pair naturally with the bat flight: drive the loop or hike in the cool of late afternoon, watch the bats spiral out at dusk from the amphitheater, and stay for the stars. It's the perfect above-ground evening to bookend a day in the cave.

⚠ Desert Heat & Sun Are No Joke

The Chihuahuan Desert is brutally hot and exposed in summer, with little shade and no water on the trails. Hike early or late, carry more water than feels necessary, wear sun cover, and watch the time — and mind rattlesnakes and flash floods in the canyons.

For the Desert & Stars

Sun and water by day, warmth and a red light by night.
