Ranger-Guided Tours

Beyond the two self-guided trails, Carlsbad's ranger-guided tours reach the cave's deeper, hidden rooms — from the elegant King's Palace to wild, lantern-lit crawls. They're the park's richest cave experiences. One honest caveat: right now, they're paused.

The Honest Status First

As of 2026, all ranger-guided tours at Carlsbad Caverns — including King's Palace — are temporarily suspended until further notice. We're keeping this guide because they're a core part of the park and are expected to return, but check the National Park Service site for the latest before you build a trip around one. The self-guided Big Room and Natural Entrance remain open.

King's Palace — the Classic Tour

When it runs, the King's Palace tour is the signature guided experience — a ranger-led walk through four of the most beautifully decorated 'scenic rooms' (the King's Palace, Queen's Chamber, Papoose Room, and Green Lake Room), including a famous blackout where the lights go off and you experience true cave darkness. It's moderate and suitable for most visitors.

The Wild Caves

For the adventurous, guided tours like Lower Cave, Hall of the White Giant, Spider Cave, and Slaughter Canyon Cave involve ladders, crawling, and getting muddy in undeveloped passages — unforgettable, strenuous, and strictly limited in size. Left Hand Tunnel is a gentler lantern-lit walk. Children under 6 are not permitted on ranger tours.

How They Work (When Running)

Guided tours carry an extra fee on top of the entrance pass and must be reserved ahead through recreation.gov or 877-444-6777 — the wild-cave tours especially sell out and have gear and age requirements. When they resume, book as early as you can.
