How much of Carlsbad you see comes down to time — and the reservation. These plans, from a single big day to a long weekend, are built around the cave, the bats, and the remarkable country above and around it.
One Day: Cave & Bats
The classic: reserve a morning timed-entry, hike down the Natural Entrance, loop the Big Room, and ride the elevator up — then spend the afternoon in town or on the desert drive and return for the free bat flight at dusk. Cave and bats in one full, unforgettable day.
Two Days: Add the Desert & the Stars
With a second day, slow down: do the cave unhurried one morning, drive the Walnut Canyon Desert Drive and a short desert hike another, and give an evening to the bat flight and stargazing under some of the darkest skies in the country. Two days lets the park breathe.
Long Weekend: Two National Parks
Three or four days lets you pair Carlsbad with Guadalupe Mountains National Park, 35 minutes south — hike Guadalupe Peak or McKittrick Canyon, then return for another cave morning or a wild-cave tour if they've resumed. It's two national parks and a lot of dark sky in one trip.
Note on Guided Tours
If you're hoping for a King's Palace or wild-cave tour, remember they're currently suspended (as of 2026) — check the Park Service site before you plan around one, and lean on the two excellent self-guided trails, which are always open.
You can't just show up. A timed-entry reservation is required year-round to enter the cavern — it's only $1 per person through recreation.gov, but it's separate from the $15 entrance fee and it can sell out on busy days. Book it before you drive out, then buy the $15 pass (ages 16+; 15 and under free) at the visitor center.
Lock the timed-entry reservation first, do the cave in the cool, quiet morning, and aim your evening at the bat flight and the stars. Reserve early, start early, end under the sky — that's the Carlsbad rhythm.
