How to Do Carlsbad Caverns on a Budget

Carlsbad Caverns is a bargain among national parks: $15 gets you into one of the world's great caves for the day, the bat flight is free, and the nearby town keeps lodging and food cheap. A little planning around the reservation is all it takes.

$15 Gets You the Cave

The entrance fee is just $15 per person (ages 16+; 15 and under free), plus the $1 timed-entry reservation. That covers both self-guided routes — the massive Big Room and the Natural Entrance descent — which is hours of world-class cave for the price of a movie ticket. An America the Beautiful pass covers the $15 if you have one.

The Bat Flight Is Free

The evening bat flight program costs nothing and needs no cave ticket — a free highlight in season (roughly late spring through October). Pair a daytime cave visit with the free bats at dusk and you've filled a day on almost nothing.

Cheap Beds in Carlsbad & Whites City

There's no lodging in the park, but the town of Carlsbad (about 30 minutes away) has affordable chain motels and cheap, good New Mexican food, and Whites City at the park turnoff has a basic motel if you want to be closest. Book ahead in summer and around bat season.

Pack Water & Layers

The desert above is hot and services in the park are limited, so bring your own water and snacks. The cave stays about 56°F year-round, so carry a light layer even in July. Doing your own food from a Carlsbad grocery keeps the whole trip cheap.

ⓘ Reserve Your Timed Entry First

You can't just show up. A timed-entry reservation is required year-round to enter the cavern — it's only $1 per person through recreation.gov, but it's separate from the $15 entrance fee and it can sell out on busy days. Book it before you drive out, then buy the $15 pass (ages 16+; 15 and under free) at the visitor center.

ⓘ One $15 Pass, a Full Day

Grab the $1 reservation and the $15 pass, hike in the Natural Entrance in the morning, loop the Big Room, then catch the free bat flight at dusk — a complete Carlsbad day for about the cost of lunch out.
