Walking into Carlsbad Caverns through its yawning natural mouth — down and down through the twilight where the bats roost, into the deepening dark — is one of the great entrances in the national park system, and the way the cave was meant to be met.
Down Through the Cave Mouth
The Natural Entrance Trail is a self-guided, paved 1.25-mile path that switchbacks about 750 feet down through the enormous natural opening into the cavern — roughly the equivalent of descending a 79-story building. It's steep and one-way down; you ride the elevator back up.
What You'll See on the Way
The descent passes through the twilight zone near the entrance — where hundreds of thousands of bats roost in season — then into the deep cave past features like the Bat Cave and Devil's Spring, formations emerging from the dark as your eyes adjust. It ends near the elevators and the start of the Big Room.
Steep — Know Before You Go
This is a real descent: steep grades, slick spots, and no turning back once you commit (the trail is downhill only). It's not ideal for anyone with knee, heart, or breathing issues — the elevator is the easy, dignified alternative straight to the Big Room, and there's no shame in taking it.
The Best Way In
If you're able, take the Natural Entrance down and the elevator up — it's the most dramatic, immersive way to enter the cave, and it flows naturally into the Big Room loop at the bottom. Go early, before the midday crowds fill the switchbacks.
You can't just show up. A timed-entry reservation is required year-round to enter the cavern — it's only $1 per person through recreation.gov, but it's separate from the $15 entrance fee and it can sell out on busy days. Book it before you drive out, then buy the $15 pass (ages 16+; 15 and under free) at the visitor center.
The Natural Entrance is a one-way, downhill-only descent of about 750 feet on switchbacks. Wear real shoes, take your time, and if your knees or lungs object, take the elevator instead — you'll see the same Big Room either way.
