The Land of Enchantment

New Mexico is one of those states that rewards the people who slow down. Most people drive through on their way to somewhere else. This guide is for the ones who stop.

New Mexico has three UNESCO World Heritage Sites — Carlsbad Caverns, Taos Pueblo, and Chaco Culture National Historical Park. It has ancient Indigenous ruins that predate the Magna Carta, ski resorts that rival anything in Colorado, a capital city (Santa Fe) that is one of the oldest in the United States, and a national park that the government occasionally shuts down because they're testing rockets next door.

The budget range here is massive. You can spend a full day in this state for free. You can also drop several hundred dollars a night in Santa Fe and feel every penny of it. This guide covers both ends — and everything in between.

🌿 The America the Beautiful Pass

This is the single best travel tool for New Mexico. The pass is $80/year for U.S. residents and covers the entrance fee at all 400+ federal recreation sites. In New Mexico alone, it covers Carlsbad Caverns ($15/person value) and White Sands ($25/vehicle value). Buy it once — it works at every national park you visit for twelve months.
