A mid-range Carlsbad trip is about time and comfort: a couple of unhurried days to do both cave trails, the bat flight, the desert drive, and a hop across to the Guadalupe Mountains, with a good hotel in town to come back to.
Do Both Cave Trails, Unhurried
Give the cave the time it deserves: hike down the Natural Entrance in the morning when it's quiet, then spend a slow hour or two circling the Big Room — the largest cave chamber in North America. Take the elevator back up. Two easy days let you do it without rushing and still catch the bats.
The Bat Flight & the Desert Drive
Add the free evening bat flight and, by day, the Walnut Canyon Desert Drive — a scenic backcountry gravel loop through the Chihuahuan Desert. Together they show the park above ground, a side most cave visitors skip.
A Comfortable Carlsbad Base
Base in the town of Carlsbad — solid mid-range hotels, restaurants, and the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens — about 30 minutes from the park. It's the comfortable, practical home for a two- or three-day trip, far easier than the bare-bones options at the turnoff.
Day Trip to Guadalupe Mountains
Just 35 minutes south in Texas lies Guadalupe Mountains National Park — the same ancient reef that formed Carlsbad, now the highest peaks in Texas, with McKittrick Canyon and Guadalupe Peak. A mid-range trip has time to pair the two parks in one journey.
You can't just show up. A timed-entry reservation is required year-round to enter the cavern — it's only $1 per person through recreation.gov, but it's separate from the $15 entrance fee and it can sell out on busy days. Book it before you drive out, then buy the $15 pass (ages 16+; 15 and under free) at the visitor center.
As of 2026, all ranger-guided tours at Carlsbad Caverns — including King's Palace — are temporarily suspended until further notice. The two self-guided routes (the Big Room and the Natural Entrance) are open and are what most visitors come for. Check the National Park Service site for the latest before counting on a guided tour.
