Why Lubec?
Most people have never heard of Lubec, Maine. It's a small fishing town at the far northeastern corner of the country — the easternmost incorporated municipality in the United States, sitting across a narrow channel from the Canadian island of Campobello. The sunrise hits Lubec before it hits anywhere else in the country.
What makes it worth the drive: a lighthouse you can walk to, an international park with a presidential connection that charges nothing to enter, some of the best whale watching on the East Coast, and a stretch of coastline that most American travelers have entirely missed. This guide covers it all across every budget.
💡 America the Beautiful Pass: The $90 annual America the Beautiful Pass covers entrance fees at over 2,000 federal recreation sites. West Quoddy Head State Park is a Maine state park (not federal), so the pass doesn't apply there — but if you're doing a bigger Maine or national park trip, it's worth having. Get it here.

Quoddy Head Coastal Trails #
Included with park admission
West Quoddy Head State Park has a trail network along the cliffs above the ocean — bog trails, coastal trails, and a path to the beach at the base of the headland. The bog ecosystem here is rare: a raised peat bog that formed over ten thousand years and hosts carnivorous sundew plants alongside wild blueberries in season. The trails are included with the park admission below.

This is the first place in the country that sees the sunrise — if you want to be there for it, arrive before dawn. The lighthouse grounds are open for self-guided walking.

Pro Tips for Lubec
🌅 Time the Sunrise
Lubec is the first place in the contiguous U.S. to see sunrise. The lighthouse at West Quoddy Head at dawn, on a clear day, is one of the more remarkable things you can do in the northeast. Park at the gate and walk in before it opens.
🇨🇦 Bring Your Passport
Roosevelt Campobello is in Canada. You'll need a valid U.S. passport (or passport card) to cross the bridge and return. It's a quick border crossing — usually under five minutes — but you must have documentation.
🌊 Watch the Tide Schedule
Cobscook Bay has up to 24-foot tidal swings. If you're kayaking or tide-pooling, check the local tide chart before you go. The difference between high and low tide here is dramatic enough to matter for access to beaches and put-ins.
📅 Book July–August Early
Lubec is small — there are not many rooms in town. The Inn on the Wharf books out for summer weekends several months in advance. If you're targeting July or August, plan early. June and September are excellent shoulder months with lower rates.
