Lubec at Its Most Comfortable

Let's be honest: this is Downeast Maine, not a resort coast, and that's exactly the appeal. But you can absolutely do Lubec in comfort — the best small inns, a private charter, and Eastport's surprisingly good restaurants turn a rugged corner of the map into a refined escape.

The Best Small Inns

There are no resorts out here — the top stays are historic inns, well-kept B&Bs, and waterfront cottages in Lubec, plus Eastport's handsome downtown inns. Book the nicest room with a water view, well ahead; the inventory is tiny and the good places fill in summer. The luxury here is quiet, character, and the sea at your window, not marble and spas.

Charter a Private Boat

For the water on your own terms, arrange a private or small-group charter — a naturalist skipper who can time the tides for the Old Sow whirlpool, find whales in the Fundy, or run you out toward the seabird islands, without a crowded deck. A good captain is the real splurge here, and worth it.

Eastport's Table

Dining Downeast is simpler than in Portland, but Eastport punches above its size — fresh scallops and lobster, a working-waterfront setting, and a small, genuine food scene. Pair it with Lubec's seasonal waterfront spots. Check hours; kitchens keep short, seasonal schedules this far east.

Slow It Down

The premium move Downeast isn't spending more — it's staying longer. Give yourself three or four unhurried days to catch the sunrise at Quoddy Head, wait out the fog, cross to Campobello, and let the tides set your pace. Remoteness is the amenity, and time is how you buy it.

⚠ Campobello Is Canada — Bring a Passport

The Roosevelt park sits on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, reached by the bridge from Lubec. Crossing means a real international border both ways — every traveler needs a valid passport (or approved travel document), and the island runs on Atlantic Time, one hour ahead of Lubec. Check current border hours and rules before you go.

ⓘ The Splurge Is Space and Quiet

Don't come Downeast for luxury amenities — come for an empty cliff at sunrise, a private boat on the Fundy, and a good room with the sea outside. Spend on a longer stay and a private charter; the coast provides the rest.
