Whales & Puffins

The nutrient-rich Bay of Fundy draws whales and seabirds to this corner of Maine every summer. A whale watch or a puffin cruise from the Lubec area is a bucket-list day — wild, weather-dependent, and worth building a trip around.

Bay of Fundy Whales

The Fundy's huge tides stir up food that draws finback, minke, and humpback whales, plus harbor porpoises and seals, through the summer and into early fall. Whale watches sail from Eastport (a short drive around the bay) and nearby harbors — a few hours on the water with a good chance of whales when seas cooperate.

Puffins at Machias Seal Island

For puffins, Bold Coast Charter Company sails from Cutler to Machias Seal Island, one of the best Atlantic puffin colonies in the region — also razorbills, murres, and Arctic terns. The season runs roughly late May to mid-August; trips take about five hours (an hour each way) and cost more than a whale watch. Space is very limited, so book well ahead.

Set Honest Expectations

This is wild-animal, open-ocean travel: island landings aren't guaranteed (you may view the puffins from just offshore), whales are never a certainty, and trips cancel for fog, wind, or seas. Come with a flexible day or two, dress warm and waterproof, and treat a calm, clear morning as the gift it is Downeast.

From Shore, Too

You don't need a boat to see wildlife here. From the cliffs at Quoddy Head and the Bold Coast, patient watchers spot whales spouting offshore, seals, porpoises, eagles, and seabirds. Bring binoculars and give it time — the Fundy rewards people who linger.

ⓘ Plan Around the Fog & the Season

This is one of the foggiest stretches of the East Coast, and Lubec all but closes down in winter. The sweet spot is summer through early October — whales and puffins in summer, clearer skies and foliage in September. Even in season, build in a flexible day: fog can gray out the coast, and boat trips cancel for weather.

ⓘ Book Puffins Early, Dress for the Sea

Puffin trips to Machias Seal Island are few and fill months ahead; reserve as early as you can. Whatever the boat, dress in warm, waterproof layers — it's far colder and wetter on the Fundy than on shore, even in July.
