Lubec is a small, remote town where the best things cost little or nothing: standing at the easternmost point of the United States, walking cliff trails over the Bay of Fundy, and watching some of the highest tides in the world roll in and out.
The Easternmost Point & the Lighthouse
At Quoddy Head State Park, the candy-striped West Quoddy Head Light stands at the easternmost point of the continental United States — the first place the country sees the sunrise. The grounds and the view of the red-and-white 1858 tower are the signature Lubec photo, and a small day-use fee (a few dollars) is all it costs to walk the headland.
Cliff & Bog Trails
The park's Coastal Trail runs about four miles round trip along the cliff edge with big open views to the Canadian islands (steep, rocky, and with no guardrail — mind your footing). A gentler bog boardwalk loops through a rare subarctic peat bog. Down the coast, the Bold Coast trails at Cutler are free and even more dramatic.
Watch the Bay of Fundy Tides
Lubec sits on the Bay of Fundy, home to some of the highest tides on Earth — the water can rise and fall roughly 20 feet here. Watching the harbor drain to mudflats and refill over a few hours is a free, quietly astonishing show. Check a tide chart and time a visit to the waterfront around the change.
The Town & the Eastport Waterfront
Wandering Lubec's tiny working waterfront — a former sardine-canning capital — and driving around the bay to Eastport, an artsy island city with a deep-water pier, costs nothing and shows you real Downeast Maine. Watch for eagles, seals, and porpoises from shore.
This is one of the foggiest stretches of the East Coast, and Lubec all but closes down in winter. The sweet spot is summer through early October — whales and puffins in summer, clearer skies and foliage in September. Even in season, build in a flexible day: fog can gray out the coast, and boat trips cancel for weather.
Because it's the easternmost point in the US, West Quoddy Head sees the country's first sunrise. Getting up for it — lighthouse, cliffs, and the sun coming out of the Atlantic — is the most memorable free thing you can do in Lubec. Check the fog forecast the night before.
