THE EARNEST TRAVELER
Lubec is about as far as you can drive in the eastern US — the literal end of the road. That remoteness is the whole point, and it means a little planning: an airport a few hours off, a car for certain, and a passport if you're crossing to Campobello.
Nearest Airports
The closest airport is Bangor (BGR), about 2.5 hours west; Portland (PWM) is roughly 4.5 hours and Boston (BOS) about six. There's no practical bus or train to Lubec, so you'll fly into Bangor and rent a car (or drive up the coast) — a car is essential out here.
The Drive from Acadia
From Acadia / Bar Harbor, Lubec is a scenic two to two-and-a-half-hour drive northeast, largely on US-1 through classic Downeast fishing villages and blueberry country. It's one of the prettiest stretches of coast in Maine and makes Lubec a natural add-on to an Acadia trip.
The Campobello Crossing
If you're visiting the Roosevelt park, you'll cross the FDR Memorial Bridge into Canada — a real international border. Carry a passport (every traveler), remember Campobello is on Atlantic Time, an hour ahead, and check current border hours. Everything else in this guide is on the US side and needs no crossing.
Fuel, Supplies & Season
Services are thin Downeast: fill the tank and stock up before you head out, and don't count on late-night anything. The season that makes sense is summer through early October — whales and puffins in summer, foliage and clearer skies in fall. Winter is beautiful but very quiet, with widespread closures.
