Lubec for a Mid-Range Trip

A mid-range Lubec trip buys you the water — a whale watch, a puffin cruise, or the Old Sow whirlpool tour — plus a comfortable inn and a day across the border at the Roosevelt cottage. It's the sweet spot for seeing the region's real wonders.

Get on the Water

The Bay of Fundy is best met by boat. Options run from a whale watch out of Eastport (finback, minke, humpback, porpoises) to the Old Sow whirlpool tour, to a puffin cruise from Cutler to Machias Seal Island. Most run a few hours and cost from tens to a few hundred dollars (puffins are the priciest); all are weather-dependent, so book early and keep a backup day.

Cross to Campobello

Drive the bridge to Campobello Island and tour Roosevelt Campobello International Park — FDR's 34-room summer cottage and its Bay of Fundy grounds. Admission is free, but remember it's Canada: bring a passport and set your watch an hour ahead. It's an easy, rewarding half-day.

A Cozy Inn Base

Skip the campground and base in a Lubec inn, B&B, or cottage — small, characterful, and walkable to the waterfront — or in Eastport's historic downtown. These are comfortable, not fancy, and that's the Downeast way. Book ahead; there aren't many rooms out here.

Two Bold Coast Hikes

Pair the boat days with the region's two great cliff walks: the Coastal Trail at Quoddy Head and the longer Bold Coast loop at Cutler. Between hikes, tides, wildlife, and a border crossing, a mid-range trip here stays full for three or four days.

ⓘ Plan Around the Fog & the Season

This is one of the foggiest stretches of the East Coast, and Lubec all but closes down in winter. The sweet spot is summer through early October — whales and puffins in summer, clearer skies and foliage in September. Even in season, build in a flexible day: fog can gray out the coast, and boat trips cancel for weather.

ⓘ Book the Boats First, Then Build Around Them

Puffin trips and whale watches are limited, seasonal, and cancel for weather — so reserve them first and plan the rest of your days (lighthouse, Campobello, Bold Coast) around the confirmed departures. Aim for calm-looking mornings.
