Asheville and the Blue Ridge give you a rare mix — a real city, a Gilded Age estate, and some of the best mountain scenery in the East, all within an hour of each other. These plans balance the paid highlights with free Parkway time, and assume you'll confirm open road segments before you drive.
One Day — City & a Summit
Spend the morning at Biltmore (reserve a house-entry time), then drive a stretch of the Parkway to an open overlook or up to Mount Mitchell if the road to it is clear. Close the day in Asheville's South Slope breweries and downtown. It's a lot, but it captures the region's range.
Three Days — Estate, Mountains & Waterfalls
Day 1: Biltmore and downtown Asheville. Day 2: head south to the DuPont waterfalls and the Brevard side, or north to Grandfather Mountain and the Linn Cove Viaduct, depending on which Parkway segments are open. Day 3: the River Arts District, a food or beer tour, and a final Parkway overlook.
Add the Smokies
With more time, keep driving. The Parkway's southern end reaches Cherokee and the eastern gate of Great Smoky Mountains National Park — a natural two-park road trip. See our full Great Smoky Mountains guide to plan that half.
On Timing & Road Status
We don't publish fixed drive times between areas — Parkway closures, tunnel detours, and fall-color traffic move them around. Build in generous buffers, check the NPS road-status page the morning you drive, and keep a flexible plan so a closed segment just reroutes the day.
Hurricane Helene (September 2024) damaged sections of the Parkway. As of 2026 more than 400 miles have reopened and the National Park Service expects all road repairs finished by the end of 2026 — but some segments, especially between Linville Falls (Milepost 317) and Mount Mitchell (Milepost 355), may still be closed. Always check the live NPS road-status page for the day you travel.
In 2026 the smart move is to hold your Parkway days loosely. Confirm which segments are open, then slot Mount Mitchell, Grandfather, or the southern waterfalls accordingly. There's always an open, beautiful option.
