A Day at Biltmore
George Vanderbilt's 250-room estate is the region's marquee paid attraction — the house, 8,000 acres of Olmsted-designed grounds, and America's most-visited winery. Reservations are required and prices vary by date and season; buying online ahead (or at the Asheville Visitor Center) is both cheaper and necessary on busy days. Budget most of a day. Guided Food & Beer Tours
Asheville is one of the country's great food-and-beer towns, and guided walking or van tours are an easy mid-range splurge — a curated crawl through the breweries of the South Slope, or a downtown food tour. They're a good way to taste widely without planning every stop yourself.
Scenic Drives & Easy Adventures
Between the paid highlights, the Parkway's overlooks and the waterfalls of DuPont and Pisgah give you full days for the price of gas. Grandfather Mountain and Mount Mitchell add modest admission or state-park access for two of the best summits in the East. Space the driving out — this is slow country.
A Comfortable Base
Mid-range lodging clusters in and around Asheville: well-run hotels downtown, in Biltmore Village, and along the river, plus inns in Black Mountain and the gateway towns. Book well ahead for October; fall color fills rooms across western North Carolina.
Hurricane Helene (September 2024) damaged sections of the Parkway. As of 2026 more than 400 miles have reopened and the National Park Service expects all road repairs finished by the end of 2026 — but some segments, especially between Linville Falls (Milepost 317) and Mount Mitchell (Milepost 355), may still be closed. Always check the live NPS road-status page for the day you travel.
Biltmore requires timed reservations, and the best food and beer tours sell out on weekends. Lock these in before you arrive so the rest of the trip can stay loose.
