THE EARNEST TRAVELER
At 6,684 feet, Mount Mitchell is the highest peak in the eastern United States — higher than anything in the Appalachians or east of the Mississippi River. You can nearly drive to the top, which makes one of the great summit views in the country genuinely accessible.
The Summit
A short paved path leads from the parking area to the summit observation platform and its 360-degree view over range after range of blue mountains. This is spruce-fir forest, cool and often cloud-wrapped even in July — it can be 20 degrees colder than Asheville, so carry a layer whatever the season below.
Getting There
Mount Mitchell sits in the 1,855-acre Mount Mitchell State Park, reached from the Blue Ridge Parkway by turning onto NC 128 at Milepost 355.4. Because the mountain lies inside the Linville-to-Mitchell stretch that took the heaviest Helene damage, this is exactly the kind of access to confirm on the NPS road-status page before you set out.
What Else Is Up There
The state park adds a small natural-history exhibit, picnic areas, and trails ranging from short summit loops to longer ridge hikes for those who want to earn more of the view. There's no fee to enter the state park itself.
Hurricane Helene (September 2024) damaged sections of the Parkway. As of 2026 more than 400 miles have reopened and the National Park Service expects all road repairs finished by the end of 2026 — but some segments, especially between Linville Falls (Milepost 317) and Mount Mitchell (Milepost 355), may still be closed. Always check the live NPS road-status page for the day you travel.
The summit weather is genuinely alpine — wind, fast-moving cloud, and temperatures far below the valley. Bring a warm layer and rain shell even on a clear summer morning, and check that both the Parkway approach and NC 128 are open.
