Asheville: Beer City in the Blue Ridge

Asheville built a national reputation on craft beer, and the scene is one of the densest in the country for a city its size. Breweries anchor whole neighborhoods here, and touring them is as much about the districts and the mountain-town atmosphere as the beer itself.

The South Slope

Just south of downtown, the South Slope packs taprooms into a few walkable blocks — the easiest place to sample widely on foot without driving between stops. It's the heart of the city's brewing district and a natural evening's crawl.

The River Arts District

Along the French Broad River, working art studios share the neighborhood with riverside breweries. Wedge Brewing is back in the district after the storm, and taprooms like Zillicoah sit right on the water. It's a looser, more spread-out scene than the South Slope — pair it with a studio wander.

Beyond the Beer

The same neighborhoods that pour the beer are full of the food, music, and galleries that make Asheville worth a trip on its own. Tailgate markets, food halls, and nationally recognized restaurants mean the city rewards a day off the Parkway.

Asheville After Helene

One year on, Asheville is open and thriving: downtown, the River Arts District, and the breweries are operating, and the city is actively welcoming visitors as part of its recovery. Coming here and spending your money is, right now, one of the most useful things a traveler can do for the region.

ⓘ Don't Drink and Drive the Mountains

The Parkway and mountain roads are no place for an impaired driver, and Asheville's districts are built for walking. Base yourself where you can tour on foot, or use a rideshare or a guided tour.
