✓ Sassafras Mountain# — South Carolina's highest point, 3,560 ft. Paved road up, free parking, short walk to a 360° observation tower. Views into North Carolina and Georgia. No fee, no permit. Open sunrise to sunset.
✓ Old Sheldon Church Ruins# — Burned by the British, rebuilt, burned again by Union troops in 1865. Tall brick arches in a grove of live oaks with Spanish moss. Free to visit any time of day. Best at late afternoon golden hour.
✓ Devil's Fork State Park & Lake Jocassee # — $8 adult admission, free on Tuesdays. The only public access to Lake Jocassee — a 7,565-acre mountain lake with 60-foot water visibility. The waterfalls feeding the lake are accessible only by boat. Day admission is the entry point.

Budget Tier #

$8 park admission / $25–$66/night camping

✓ Hunting Island State Park # — $8 adult admission. Semi-wild barrier island near Beaufort — undeveloped beach, maritime forest trails, and a lighthouse you can climb for $2 extra. Camping from $25–$66/night (100 sites, water and electric). Two-night minimum on most reservations.
✓ Hunting Island Lighthouse # — $2 above the $8 day fee. Built 1875, stands 132 feet tall, 167 original cast-iron steps. Operated until 1933. Views of undeveloped maritime forest and open Atlantic from the top.
✓ Edisto Beach State Park Camping # — Tent sites from $25/night, beachfront campsites from $60/night. 112 total sites — tent, RV, and saltmarsh cabins. Quiet, less developed than the resort areas. More on the cabins in mid-range.
✓ SC All-Park Passport # — $99 for non-residents — covers day-use admission to all SC state parks for a year. Hit Hunting Island + Edisto Beach + Devil's Fork in one weekend and it pays for itself. Camping is additional.

Mid-Range Tier #

$135+/night saltmarsh cabins / rental gear at Devil's Fork

✓ Edisto Beach Saltmarsh Cabins # — Seven cabins (5 one-bedroom, 2 three-bedroom) overlooking tidal creek and marsh. From $135/night, two-night minimum. Climate-controlled, fully furnished, linens included, screened porch, full kitchen. Book as far out as the reservation system allows — they go fast.
✓ Lake Jocassee Boat & Kayak Rentals # — On-site seasonal rentals through the park concessioner. Check current rates at the link — they vary by season. You don't need to own gear to reach Jocassee's waterfalls. A half day paddling to the eastern shore is the experience.
✓ Hunting Island Beach-Facing Campsites # — Beach-facing sites from $60/night put you steps from an undeveloped barrier island shoreline. No resort infrastructure between you and the water. A hotel two miles back from the coast can't replicate this.
✓ Charleston as a Base (Mid-Range)# — Mid-range historic district hotels give you a home base for day trips: 50 minutes to Edisto Beach, 90 minutes to Hunting Island. Reasonable trade at this tier if you value access over immersion.

✓ Lake Jocassee Guided Full-Day Charter # — Several outfitters in the Upcountry SC area offer guided full-day charters on Lake Jocassee. A guide who knows the hidden waterfalls, lake conditions, and eastern shore is a different day than paddling out alone. Check current options via the link.
