✓ Angel Oak Tree, Johns Island # — 400+ years old. Sixty-five feet tall, branches spreading 160 feet across — the largest living oak east of the Mississippi. Branches dip toward the ground and rise again, creating a canopy like a cathedral of bark and Spanish moss. City of Charleston manages the site. Free admission, open Mon–Sat 9am–5pm, Sun 1pm–5pm.

Budget Tier #

$3–$25 park access

✓ Caesars Head State Park # — $3 adult admission — the lowest state park entry fee in South Carolina. Dramatic granite ledge overlook with views across the Blue Ridge. Short walk from the parking area. September–November: prime hawk migration season.
✓ Raven Cliff Falls Trail # — 4 miles round trip from the Caesars Head trailhead, gaining ~800 feet. The falls drop 420 feet — the tallest waterfall cascade in South Carolina. Strenuous. Plan 3–4 hours. Bring water and layers — the ridge runs noticeably cooler than the valley.
✓ Caesars Head Hawk Migration # — September 1–November 30. Counter volunteers track the broad-winged hawk kettles from the overlook platform — included in the $3 admission. Peak: late September after a cold front. Kettles of hundreds of raptors spiral in a single thermal overhead before gliding south.
✓ Kiawah Island Beachwalker Park # — The only public beach access on Kiawah Island. Vehicle entry: $5–$25 depending on season/day. Wide, clean, lower density than resort beaches. Only 150 parking spots — arrive before 9am on summer weekends or the lot fills by 10:30. Open 9am–8pm May through Labor Day.

Mid-Range Tier #

✓ Table Rock State Park # — $6 adults / $3.75 SC seniors / $3.50 kids 6–15. Blue Ridge foothills park with two lakes, CCC-built lodge, mountain cabins, and some of the best trails in the Upstate. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s — many structures on the National Register of Historic Places.
✓ Table Rock Summit Trail # — 3.5 miles one way (7 miles round trip). 2,000 feet of elevation gain. Strenuous. Hardwood forest transitioning to upper-elevation species, CCC stone-and-log structures, and an exposed granite summit with views across the Upstate. Plan 5–6 hours round trip.
✓ Carrick Creek Nature Loop # — 1.9 miles, moderate. Creek crossings, wildflower habitat in spring, mixed hardwood forest. Good morning trail for families or anyone who wants the Table Rock experience without the full summit vertical.
✓ Table Rock Lake Rentals (Pinnacle Lake)# — Canoes, kayaks, and pedal boats available seasonally from the visitor center. Rates vary — check current pricing at the link. The view back toward Table Rock Mountain from the water is one of the better mountain-lake perspectives in the state.
✓ Greenville as a Base# — 45 minutes from Table Rock, 30 minutes from Caesars Head. Walkable downtown, solid mid-range hotel options, and a food scene that surprises most visitors. Cover both parks in two days from Greenville with trail day at each.

Table Rock cabins / Kiawah Island Golf Resort (rates vary)

✓ Table Rock State Park Furnished Cabins # — Fully furnished, climate-controlled cabins inside the park with the mountain accessible from your door. Full kitchens, linens, screened porches. Book well in advance for fall foliage season — late October into November, when the hardwood canopy turns and the park is at its most beautiful.
✓ Kiawah Island Golf Resort # — Five championship golf courses including The Ocean Course (2021 PGA Championship). Full beach services, rooftop spa, 10 miles of beach. Strict development controls since the 1970s kept the island's natural corridors intact — herons in the tidal marsh, alligators in the lagoons. Rates at the top of the South Carolina market. ✓ Hawk Migration — Best Possible Day # — Three dollars to get in. Late September, morning after a cold front from the north, granite overlook at Caesars Head. Kettles of broad-winged hawks spiral overhead before gliding south toward South America. It doesn't photograph well — the scale doesn't translate to a screen. But it stays with you.

Table Rock Cabins: Book for Fall

Fall foliage peaks late October–November. Cabins book out months in advance for that window. Lock in the cabin first, then plan the trip around it.

Kiawah Beachwalker: Beat the Lot

150 parking spots. On summer weekends the lot fills by 10:30am. Arrive before 9am or visit on a weekday. January and February parking drops to $5 — an option for the off-season beach walk.
