✓ Boardwalk Loop — 2.4 Miles # — Elevated wooden walkway through old-growth forest, above the floodplain. Stands of ancient cypress and loblolly pine. No fee, no reservation. The signature Congaree experience.
✓ Weston Lake Loop — 4.4 Miles # — Extends the boardwalk and reaches an oxbow lake in the bottomland. Still free, no permit. One of 25 miles of marked trails in the park, all at no cost.
✓ Cedar Creek Canoe & Kayak Trail # — 6.6-mile marked water trail through dark water and enormous trees. Free to paddle with your own gear. Permit not required for day paddling. One of the quietest water trails in the Southeast.
✓ Longleaf Campground # — 8 primitive sites available year-round — free with a permit from the visitor center. Picnic tables, fire rings, portable toilets. Backcountry dispersed camping also free (permit required 72 hrs in advance).

Budget Tier #

$71–$77/night lodging in Columbia / Park is free

✓ Fort Jackson Corridor Hotels# — Budget chains 12–15 miles from the park entrance, starting around $71/night. The I-77 stretch between Columbia and the park has a solid range of familiar brands.
✓ Columbia Downtown Budget Lodging# — Starting around $77/night, 25 minutes from the trailhead. Downtown Columbia puts you near the Vista District food scene without a premium price.
✓ Check Conditions Before You Go # — Congaree floods. The park sits in a floodplain — check trail and boardwalk status at nps.gov/cong before arriving. The park service posts conditions clearly and keeps it current.
✓ Cedar Creek Kayak Day Trip # — Free with your own gear. If you're road-tripping with a car-top carrier, this is one of the experiences worth the extra weight. Flat water, massive trees, no crowds.

✓ Hotel Trundle, Columbia # — Boutique hotel on Main Street, $166–$290/night with complimentary rotating artisanal breakfast. 25 minutes from Congaree. The best accommodation option for pairing the city with the park. Plan two days — one for the boardwalk, one for Cedar Creek.
✓ The Graduate Columbia # — Near the University of South Carolina campus, the Graduate brand's signature style at similar pricing to Hotel Trundle. A solid alternative with its own distinct character.
✓ Synchronous Firefly Event (mid-May)# — Lottery entry ~$45/vehicle, limited to 145 vehicles per evening. One of the genuinely rare natural experiences in the eastern US — thousands of fireflies synchronizing flashes in old-growth forest. Lottery opens early April on recreation.gov and sells out in minutes. Set a calendar reminder for 2027.
✓ Columbia Vista District Dining# — $15–$25/person for a full meal at most Main Street spots. The city's food scene punches above its size — independent restaurants, cocktail bars, coffee shops. A 25-minute drive from the park entrance in either direction.

✓ Dawn on the Boardwalk # — Free at any tier — but it's the most visually striking thing the park offers. Morning mist over the floodplain, first light filtering through the canopy at an angle. Arrive before sunrise for the full effect.

Pro Tips

Congaree Floods — Always Check

Check nps.gov/cong/planyourvisit/conditions.htm before every visit. The park can be underwater with little notice. Two-minute check saves a wasted trip.

Best Windows: Mar–Apr, Oct–Nov

Spring and fall are the two ideal windows. Summer brings extreme heat, extreme humidity, and biting insects. The boardwalk is good year-round; back-country is not.

Firefly Lottery: April Calendar Reminder

For 2027, set a reminder for early April. The recreation.gov lottery for the mid-May synchronous firefly event sells out within the first hour it opens.
