Cumberland Island at Its Most Refined

There's exactly one way to sleep on Cumberland Island in comfort, and it's one of the most storied inns in the South: the Greyfield, a Carnegie family mansion turned all-inclusive retreat, with the wild island as its private backyard.

The Greyfield Inn

The Greyfield Inn is the island's only lodging — a mansion the Carnegies built in 1890, now an intimate inn with 15 rooms and two cottages. It's fully all-inclusive: all meals (much of it from the inn's own 1.5-acre garden), naturalist-guided outings, bikes, and the crossing. Rates start around $825 a night. It is the definition of getting away from it all.

What a Stay Includes

Beyond the room and the food, the inn's naturalists lead biking, kayaking, and walks into the wild island most visitors only sample on a day trip. You wake up among the 300-year-old live oaks, wander to an empty beach, and come back to a farm-to-table dinner — no cars, no crowds, no schedule but your own.

Why It's Different

This isn't a resort in the usual sense — there's no spa tower or golf course, and that's the point. The luxury here is exclusivity and place: a historic house on a wild island capped at 300 people a day, with the horses and the shore essentially to yourself. For a special occasion, few places in America match it.

Booking Ahead

The Greyfield is small and books far in advance, especially for weekends, holidays, and its well-known weddings. If your dates are fixed, reserve as early as you can, and confirm exactly what the rate covers (including the private ferry from Fernandina).

ⓘ The Splurge Is the Place, Not the Frills

Don't come to the Greyfield for amenities — come for a Gilded-Age house on a wild island you have nearly to yourself. The setting is the luxury, and there's nothing else like it on the coast.
