Outdoor Chattanooga: The Scenic City

Chattanooga calls itself the Scenic City, and the outdoors is genuinely why. The Tennessee River runs through the middle of it, mountains rise on three sides, and a network of trails, water, and climbing puts adventure minutes from downtown.

The Tennessee Riverwalk

The riverfront Tennessee Riverwalk runs for miles along the Tennessee River, a paved path for walking, running, and biking that links downtown parks to the North Shore and beyond. It's the free, easy front door to outdoor Chattanooga — do a stretch of it even on a short trip.

Climbing, Paddling & Flying

Chattanooga is a nationally known rock-climbing town, with sandstone on Lookout Mountain and nearby. The Tennessee River and its gorge draw kayakers and paddleboarders, and Lookout Mountain is one of the country's classic hang-gliding sites. Guided trips and rentals make these accessible to visitors.

The Tennessee River Gorge & the Mountains

Just west of town, the Tennessee River Gorge is one of the largest river canyons in the eastern US, laced with trails and overlooks. Lookout, Signal, and Raccoon Mountains ring the city with hiking and views — a lot of it a short drive from downtown.

Planning Outdoor Days

Spring and fall are ideal; summer is hot and humid, so start early. Much of the riverfront is free; guided climbing, paddling, and flying are paid experiences booked with local outfitters. Bring water and sun protection — the river reflects a lot of heat.

ⓘ Downtown to Wild in Minutes

Few cities put real outdoor adventure this close to a walkable downtown. You can paddle the river or hike the gorge in the morning and be at a riverfront dinner by evening.
