Chattanooga earns the nickname “the Scenic City” for free — the Tennessee River runs right through downtown, and a lot of the best of it costs nothing. You can fill a day on the riverfront and the trails without buying a ticket.
The Tennessee Riverwalk
A riverfront path runs for miles along the Tennessee River, connecting downtown parks, public art, and the North Shore. It's free, flat, and walkable or bikeable — the easiest way to see the river-city heart of Chattanooga at your own pace.
Coolidge Park & the North Shore
Across the river on the North Shore, Coolidge Park has open lawns, an interactive fountain, and a restored antique carousel. The surrounding North Shore district is free to wander, with shops and river views. It's a favorite spot for families and an easy walk from downtown.
Downtown & the Bluff View Art District
Downtown Chattanooga is compact and walkable, and the Bluff View Art District — a small historic neighborhood on a bluff above the river — is free to stroll, with gardens, sculpture, and some of the best river overlooks in the city.
The Walnut Street Bridge
One of the longest pedestrian bridges in the country stretches 2,376 feet across the Tennessee River, linking downtown to the North Shore. It's free to walk when open — note the reopening status below if you're visiting in 2026.
The Walnut Street Bridge has been closed for a major restoration and is set to reopen in late September 2026. If you're visiting right around then, check the current status before you plan to walk it — the riverfront parks on both ends are open regardless.
The riverfront is the free spine of a Chattanooga trip. Park once downtown, walk the Riverwalk to Coolidge Park and back, and you've seen the best of the city center for the price of the meter.
