Lookout Mountain: Rock City, Ruby Falls & the Incline

Lookout Mountain rises just southwest of downtown Chattanooga and holds the city's three most famous attractions — a clifftop garden, an underground waterfall, and a historic railway. You can do one or string all three together.

Rock City

Atop the mountain on the Georgia side, Rock City is a walking trail through massive rock formations, narrow passages, and lush gardens to Lover's Leap, where a clear-day overlook is said to take in seven states. The path includes the whimsical Fairyland Caverns, and the seasonal Enchanted Garden of Lights runs in winter. Plan two to four hours.

Ruby Falls

Inside Lookout Mountain, a 260-foot glass-front elevator drops you into the cave to the tallest underground waterfall open to the public in the United States. The guided cave walk to the falls and back runs about two to two-and-a-half hours — a genuinely different experience from the mountaintop views.

The Incline Railway

Running since 1895, the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway climbs the mountainside on a grade that reaches 72.7% near the top — one of the steepest passenger railways in the world. The trip takes about ten minutes each way, and the top station has observation decks over the Tennessee Valley, near Point Park and its Civil War history.

Doing All Three

The three attractions sell combination tickets that cost less than buying separately — the move if you want more than one. They're close together on the mountain but each takes a couple of hours, so a full Lookout Mountain day is realistic; buy tickets online ahead in peak season.

ⓘ Two States, One Mountain

Lookout Mountain straddles the Tennessee–Georgia line — Ruby Falls and the Incline are on the Tennessee side, Rock City just over in Georgia. It's a few minutes between them by car; mind the combo-ticket details when you plan the order.
