Pigeon River Whitewater Rafting
The Pigeon River runs along the park's northern edge near the Tennessee line with Class III and IV rapids through a mountain gorge. Several outfitters run guided half- and full-day trips, and the Class III section needs no experience — one of the most popular adventures in the gateway area.
Horseback Riding Inside the Park
The park keeps more than 550 miles of horse trails and concession-run stables at Cades Cove, Smokemont, Sugarlands, and Smoky Mountain Riding Stables. Guided rides run seasonally; rates vary by length. It is a genuinely different way to see the coves and creek bottoms.
Great Smoky Mountains Railroad
From Bryson City on the quiet North Carolina side, a scenic excursion train runs through river gorges and across trestles the road never reaches. It pairs well with a Cades Cove or Cataloochee day and a night in Bryson City.
A Comfortable Base
Mid-range lodging runs in the gateway towns — well-located inns and hotels in Gatlinburg, Townsend (the quiet “peaceful side”), and Bryson City. Book ahead for October; fall color fills every room within an hour of the park.
