Cades Cove is the single most popular destination in the most-visited national park in America — an 11-mile one-way loop through an open mountain valley that has been farmed, settled, and finally preserved.
The Loop
The one-way loop road runs 11 miles around a broad valley ringed by mountains. Allow two to four hours in season — traffic crawls when wildlife appears. Original 1800s cabins, three churches, and a working grist mill still stand along the route, with pullouts to walk out and see them.
Wildlife
White-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and black bears all use the valley regularly; the park has an estimated 1,900 bears, one of the highest densities in the eastern US. First light and the last hour before dark are when animals move and the road is quietest. Never approach or feed wildlife.
Vehicle-Free Wednesdays
From May 6 to September 30, 2026, the loop is closed to motor vehicles all day every Wednesday so walkers and cyclists have it to themselves. (This replaced the old part-morning Wednesday-and-Saturday schedule.) It is the best way to experience the cove without a windshield in front of you.
The loop opens sunrise to sunset. Arriving at first light beats both the traffic and the heat, and it is when the deer and bears are actually out. By mid-morning in summer the loop can back up bumper to bumper.
Getting There
Cades Cove is on the quiet Townsend side of the park, reached via Laurel Creek Road. Remember the parking tag if you stop longer than 15 minutes at the visitor center, campground, or any trailhead along the loop.
A wildlife loop rewards good optics and an early start.
