Where you sleep shapes a Vegas trip more than almost anywhere — it decides how much you walk, how much you spend, and which version of the city you get. The choice comes down to Strip, Downtown, or off-Strip, and to reading past the room rate.
Center-Strip (Most Visitors)
For a first trip, center-Strip — around Bellagio, Caesars, the Cosmopolitan, and Paris — is the sweet spot: you can walk to the fountains, the best dining, and the show venues in minutes. It costs more, but it saves the most time and hassle. North (Wynn, Resorts World, the Sphere) and south (MGM, Luxor, Mandalay Bay) are a bit more spread out.
Downtown / Fremont (Value & Vibe)
Downtown is the value-and-character pick: cheaper rooms, lower table minimums, vintage casinos, and the free Fremont Street show at your door. It's a cheap rideshare from the Strip and a completely different, more old-school Vegas. Great for budget trips and repeat visitors.
Off-Strip (Value, With Wheels)
Off-Strip hotels — near the Convention Center or the locals' casinos — can be strong value and often have smaller or no resort fees, but you'll rideshare or drive to the action. Worth it for a longer stay, a convention, or if you're renting a car for day trips anyway.
Read Past the Room Rate
Wherever you look, the advertised rate isn't the real one: add the resort fee (often $45–$50-plus a night) and parking before you compare, and check whether a "deal" on the far end of the Strip really beats a pricier central room once you factor in rideshares. Location and fees decide value here, not the headline price.

In Vegas the smartest money goes to being central. A pricier center-Strip room can easily beat a "cheaper" one at the far end once you add resort fees, rideshares, and the hours you'd lose walking. Book where you'll actually spend your time.
