Vegas can be shockingly cheap or quietly expensive, and the difference is knowing where the money leaks. Cheap rooms, free spectacle, and good budget eats are everywhere — if you watch the resort fees and the temptation to gamble.
Stay Downtown or Off-Strip
The best value is Downtown (Fremont Street) or an off-Strip hotel — rooms run far below the center-Strip resorts, the vibe is fun and vintage, and you're a cheap rideshare from the action. Midweek (Sunday–Thursday) is dramatically cheaper than weekends. Just remember the resort fee when you compare.
Eat Smart
Skip the $60 buffets when money's tight: Vegas has excellent food halls, happy-hour deals, food courts, and downtown eats at every price. A famous buffet can be a splurge for one meal; fill the rest with cheaper, genuinely good food. Free casino promotions and players-club perks can stretch it further.
The Free Stuff Is the Best Stuff
Your best budget days are nearly free: the Bellagio fountains, the Strip's wonders, the Fremont Street light show, the Welcome sign, and hours of people-watching cost nothing. Add one paid thing — a cheap show or a day trip — and a budget Vegas trip lacks for nothing.
Get Around Cheap
Skip a rental car if you're staying central. The Deuce double-decker bus runs the Strip and Downtown for a low flat fare, free hotel trams link some resorts, and you can walk (mind the distance). Rideshare is easy for longer hops; a car only pays off for day trips.
The price you see is rarely the price you pay. Almost every Strip hotel adds a mandatory nightly "resort fee" — often $45 to $50-plus — on top of the advertised room rate, plus parking. Always add the resort fee to every quote before you compare hotels, or the "cheap" room isn't.
The odds always favor the house — that's how Vegas pays for the free fountains and the fake Eiffel Tower. Treat gambling as entertainment with a set budget you can afford to lose, decide that number before you sit down, and walk when it's gone. It's a great show; it's a terrible income plan.
