The view

You stand 3,214 feet directly above Curry Village, with the Valley, Half Dome, Yosemite Falls and the high country laid out below. Half Dome from here is a profile rather than a face — you are level with it instead of beneath it.
The walk from the parking area is 300 yards, paved. This is a very large payoff for very little effort, which is exactly why the lot fills.

Glacier Point Road runs roughly late May through October or November. In 2026 it opened May 9. For the rest of the year it is closed by snow.
The road's closure is one half of a bigger seasonal problem worth understanding before you book:
Tioga Road closes roughly November through May or June — about seven months. Glacier Point Road runs late May to October or November. In 2026 they opened May 9 and May 15.
A February visitor gets the Valley, Wawona and Hetch Hetchy, and nothing else: no Tuolumne Meadows, no Sentinel Dome, no Taft Point, no Glacier Point.
Parking and timing
The park warns that Glacier Point backs up as much as two hours once its lot fills. Go early or go late. Sunset here is exceptional and the crowd thins considerably after the last tour bus leaves.
Drive time is about an hour each way from the Valley, so budget three hours minimum for the round trip and the stop.
Altitude
Glacier Point is high enough to feel, and if you are continuing to Tioga Road it gets more serious: Tuolumne Meadows is 8,600 feet, Porcupine Flat 8,100, White Wolf 8,000, and Tioga Pass tops out at 9,945 feet. Driving from sea level to a Tuolumne trailhead in one morning gives your body no time to adjust. Take the first day easy up there.
Nearby, on the same road
Sentinel Dome and Taft Point both leave from trailheads on Glacier Point Road and are short hikes with outsized views. They close with the road.
