Where you stay at Mammoth Cave mostly comes down to one question: inside the park or outside it. Inside means early tours and dark skies at your doorstep; outside means more choices and lower rates.
Inside the Park — The Lodge
The Lodge at Mammoth Cave, beside the visitor center, is the only in-park lodging — a comfortable, historic base within walking distance of the cave tours, the trails, and the dark-sky meadows. It's the most convenient stay for early tours and the best pick if you want to be where the park is; book ahead for summer.
Camping
The park's Mammoth Cave Campground sits near the visitor center, with the small Houchin Ferry Campground on the river and backcountry sites (free permit) farther out. Camping is the cheapest way to stay inside the park and puts you first in line for morning tours.
Cave City & the Gateway Towns
Just outside the park, Cave City has the cluster of budget and mid-range motels, restaurants, and roadside attractions, a short drive from the entrance. It's the practical base if the lodge is full or you want more dining options.
Bowling Green
About 40 minutes away, Bowling Green offers the widest choice of hotels and restaurants and a couple of extra attractions — a reasonable base if you're combining Mammoth Cave with a broader Kentucky trip and don't mind the short daily drive.
The best cave tours and the darkest skies reward being close. If you can, stay at the lodge or campground so a 9 a.m. tour and a late-night star session don't each require a drive.
