Highway 1 reopened to mile marker 45 on September 2, so the Big Sur village lodges are drivable again. Drivable is not the same as open. Big Sur Lodge sits inside Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, which is still closed. The rest have published nothing. Anything south of Lucia is still inside the hard closure or an evacuation area. Carmel and Cambria remain the safe bookings.
The blunt version: there is currently nowhere to stay in Big Sur, and the booking engines will happily tell you otherwise.
The warning that matters most on this page
We checked the official website of every significant Big Sur property on September 1, 2026. With one exception, not one carries a fire, closure or evacuation notice. Post Ranch Inn, Ventana Big Sur, Glen Oaks, Big Sur River Inn, Big Sur Lodge, Treebones, Fernwood, Riverside, Big Sur Campground & Cabins and Ventana Campground all show normal hours and live booking. Some are promoting Labor Day events. At that point all of them were inside a hard highway closure and the coast had been evacuated. We have not re-checked those websites since the September 2 reopening — and that is exactly the problem. A site that never admitted it was closed will not announce the day it truly reopens. The exception is Esalen Institute: "temporarily closed due to the Timber Fire burning to our north," closed through September 13, reopening September 14, 2026, with workshops cancelled and guests contacted directly. It is the only Big Sur property that has published a reopening date.
Do not treat a working reservation form as a status report. If you have an existing booking, call the property. If you are making a new one, wait for Caltrans to publish a reopening.
Stay north: Carmel and Monterey
Thirty miles from the Big Sur valley and completely outside the fire area. From a Carmel base you can do Point Lobos, Carmel River State Beach, Garrapata and Bixby Bridge, all of which are open. This is the practical choice for anyone whose trip was built around the northern coast.
Stay south: Cambria and San Simeon
In San Luis Obispo County, south of the closure. Hearst Castle is open for tours with no wildfire or road advisory. The Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery is open daily and free. Ragged Point is reachable from the south under an evacuation warning only.
San Luis Obispo County's position as of August 30, 2026: "There is no immediate threat to residents in these zones at this time." There are no evacuation orders anywhere in the county.
When the coast reopens
What Big Sur lodging actually is, so you can plan the trip you will eventually take:
- Cliff-top luxury. Post Ranch Inn (adults only, ocean side) and Ventana Big Sur (mountain side, 160 acres of redwood). See Luxury Big Sur.
- Historic. Deetjen's Big Sur Inn — 1930s hand-built redwood cabins, thin walls, no televisions, a waiting list.
- Middle. Big Sur Lodge (inside Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, so it closes when the park does), Glen Oaks, Big Sur River Inn.
- Cabin-and-campground hybrids. Fernwood and Riverside, which run tent sites, tent cabins and rooms together.
- Off-grid. Treebones at Gorda — yurts, guests 13 and over, two-night minimum, no EV charging.
- Camping. Rates and booking windows are on the Budget Big Sur page.
Lucia Lodge deserves a separate note that has nothing to do with this fire: its restaurant and store were lost to a fire in late 2021 and are permanently gone. The lodge, 100 yards north, remains.
Booking reality when it does reopen
There are no chain hotels on this coast and very few rooms in total. Pfeiffer Big Sur's campground fills six months out even in winter. When Highway 1 reopened in January 2026, the county reported a 900% increase in northbound traffic. Expect the same surge whenever this closure lifts, and book the moment a date is announced rather than the moment you feel like going.
