The northern closure was lifted on September 2 — you can drive from Carmel through Big Sur village to mile marker 45. Highway 1 is still hard-closed from mile marker 19 at Kirk Creek down to mile marker 0.0 at the county line. You still cannot drive the full coast.
Big Sur has exactly one road, and in 2026 it has been cut, partly restored, and cut again. Understanding which end you are approaching from still decides your entire trip — but the answer changed on September 2.
The closure, exactly
What reopened: Monterey County lifted the northern closure at 7 p.m. on September 2, restoring Highway 1 from mile marker 56, south of the Little Sur River, down to mile marker 45 just south of the Big Sur Post Office.
What is still closed: the CHP is holding a hard closure from mile marker 19 at Kirk Creek Campground down to mile marker 0.0 at the San Luis Obispo county line — about nineteen miles. Local reporting from Big Sur puts the northern edge a little further south, at Pacific Valley near post mile 16. US 101 is the alternate route. No agency has published a reopening estimate for this stretch.
The gap we cannot verify: between mile marker 45 and mile marker 19 — roughly Big Sur Post Office down to Kirk Creek, about 26 miles — no agency currently lists a closure, and none has announced a reopening. We are not going to tell you it is open when nobody official has said so. Check Caltrans QuickMap the morning you drive.
Stale figures are circulating. Earlier on August 31 the closure was two separate segments with a locals-only stretch between them. Regional tourism sites are still showing limits dated August 27. Go to Caltrans and CAL FIRE directly, and note the timestamp on what you read.

We are not giving you drive times, on purpose. No official source publishes them, and converting these mileages at highway speed would be actively misleading. Highway 1 averages far below highway speed, and there are active one-way controls on it right now.
Airports
- Monterey Regional (MRY) — 30 miles. Closest by a wide margin.
- San José Mineta (SJC) — 120 miles.
- San Francisco (SFO) — 150 miles.
For the southern end, San Luis Obispo (SBP) is the practical arrival airport, though no official source publishes its distance to Big Sur.
There is no bus. Read this before you plan around one.
Monterey-Salinas Transit Line 22 has not run since March 4, 2017, when MST suspended the Big Sur weekend service "until further notice due to rock slide closures on Highway 1." Route 22 does not appear anywhere on MST's current route list, and its route page returns a 404.
But a Line 22 timetable PDF is still live on mst.org. It shows fares of $3.50 general and $1.75 regional discount, and stops at Nepenthe, Andrew Molera, Big Sur River Inn and Point Lobos. It is dated December 11, 2021 and says, in its own text, "No Service after 9/6/21." Any guide quoting bus fares to Big Sur is citing a dead schedule for a route that has not operated in nine years. There is no public transit to Big Sur.
Other current road restrictions
- One-way controlled traffic at Rocky Creek Bridge, 15.7 miles south of Monterey — 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through 6 a.m. on November 30, 2026.
- One-way controlled traffic at various points between Riley Ranch Road and San Jose Creek Bridge, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday, through September 4, 2026.
Approaching from the north
From Carmel you can reach Point Lobos, Carmel River State Beach, Garrapata, Rocky Creek Bridge and Bixby Creek Bridge, then the road ends at the closure. That is a genuine half-day, and everything in it is open.
Approaching from the south
From US 101 via SR-46 through Cambria and San Simeon you can reach Hearst Castle, the Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery and Ragged Point. Ragged Point is in San Luis Obispo County, south of the closure's southern terminus. It sits under an evacuation warning — not an order — and San Luis Obispo County stated on August 30 that "there is no immediate threat to residents in these zones at this time. The fire is approximately 7 miles from the SLO County line."
Note that Ragged Point Inn's own travel-updates page is badly out of date — its last substantive entry is from early 2026 and it does not mention the fires at all.
Fuel and signal
Fill up in Carmel or Cambria. Gorda By The Sea was charging $9.99 a gallon for premium in April 2026 — about $4 over the California average at the time — because the station runs on generators. And expect no phone: State Parks' own wording is "Cell phone service is extremely limited in Big Sur. Do not expect your phone to work here." Download maps before you leave town.
